Reading At Home

Parents, please read to/with your child every night for at least 15 minutes.

While reading with your children use these reading strategies when they come to an unknown word. These same strategies are used daily in class while in small group and whole group.

1. Look at the picture.
2. Get your mouth ready to say the 1st part of the word.
3. Does it make sense?
4. Does it sound right?
5. "Chunk it" by looking for a part you know inside the word.
6. Skip it, go on, come back.

Some things to consider when reading to your child:
Left to Right reading
Use Picture clues
Point to titles
Recognize and read sight words
Predicting what will happen
Concept of print (spacing, capitalization, punctuations)
Retelling a story using sequencing
Letter and sound recognition
